Pierre Frey celebrates artist Jean-Denis Malcles in Paris

Posted on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.

In September, Pierre Frey's Paris showroom will be transformed into an art gallery to present the work of Jean-Denis Malcles, renowned stage designer and illustrator, who also expressed his talent through posters, book illustrations, paintings, costume design.

The Maison Pierre Frey has long been enamored with artists' talent and sensitivity, and in addition to editing their drawings, wishes to put them in the spotlight. Throughout some 50 works presented, the contours of the Malcles style emerges demonstrating an innate sense of color, a fondness for entertainers, illusion and fantasy.

Pierre Frey and Malcles first crossed paths in 1941 at the “salon des artistes décorateurs” of which Malcles was jury committee member. Always hunting for new ideas, Frey purchased 20 drawings from him between 1941 and 1954. Many beautiful fabrics emerged from their collaboration including “Fouilli de Fleurs”, a Maison Pierre Frey bestseller remaining nearly 60 years in the collection.

Below are some images of the artwork featured in the exhibition:
