ASID implements sustainable design workshops

Posted on Friday, October 26, 2012.

The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) unveiled its latest design workshop series at High Point Market last week: the REGREEN Implementation Workshop Series.

The workshops focus exclusively on making interior design more sustainable and environmentally friendly, and address specific challenges to keep things green when renovating a space.

Annette K. Stelmack

Taught by Annette K. Stelmack, Allied ASID, LEED AP BD+C, sustainable design consultant for Inspirit-LLC and co-author of Sustainable Residential Interiors, the courses are worth 0.8 CEU credits. Attendees will also receive a REGREEN Trained certification.

The nine and a half hour workshop includes lectures, interactive discussions, group activities and presentations, which both Stelmack and participants are all involved in.

“The objective is really to get them to understand how to approach projects in a green way,” said Stelmack. “We really break down the day and take a very holistic approach to it, it’s very interactive.”

The first workshop, which was very well received by designers, took place on Oct. 17 and included young designers, LEED designers and contractors from all over the country. “It was fabulous,” said Stelmack. “There was a nice diversity of designers and folks were really engaged.”

The day covers every little detail of how to completely re-design a home in a green way, from health to general lighting issues to living, working and sleeping spaces, to plumbing and energy issues and how to create a durable and timeless space in the meantime.

“It’s set up to be both a presentation and interaction in small groups,” said program manager Lori Tugman. “Folks take what they hear Annette say, talk about it in a group and bounce it off one another. It’s an intense day with a lot of information and a lot of things to cover.”

The second workshop this year will be held in conjunction with Greenbuild in San Francisco, CA on November 12, and additional REGREEN workshops will be held nationwide in 2013.

The REGREEN workshop, builds on the foundational principles from the REGREEN Residential Remodeling Guidelines that prepares designers to identify, evaluate and implement strategies to “green” their projects.
