AIANY COTE Award winners celebrated
Oct 27, 2016

The AIA New York Committee on the Environment has named winners of its third-annual COTE Awards, four submissions chosen from projects within a 200-mile radius of New York’s Central Park.

Washington Square Park House

The Honor Awards were given to George Washington University’s Milken Institute of Public Health (Washington, D.C.), by Payette; and The Kathleen Grimm School for Leadership and Sustainability at Sandy Ground (Staten Island, NY), by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The Merit Award winners are New York Police Academy (Queens, NY), by Perkins+Will; and Washington Square Park House (New York), by BKSK Architects.

The COTE Awards celebrate sustainable design “specific to the unique climatic and urban density challenges faced in the North Eastern metropolitan corridor,” according to the AIANY. This year’s jury included James Barnes, partner, Foster + Partners; Fiona Cousins, principal, Arup; Joann Gonchar, senior editor, Architectural Record; John H. Lee, deputy director, NYC Mayor’s Office of Sustainability; and Timothy McDonald, principal, Onion Flats

Of the Washington Square Park House, McDonald says, “This ‘deceptively modest’ building has been exquisitely conceived and built at all levels of sustainability. Although small in scale, it not only demonstrates the principles of Net Zero Energy thinking but it does so as part of a holistic design that responds to its environment, client, program and site in an admirable way.”

The winners will be celebrated at a November 1 presentation at the Center for Architecture
