The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America (ICA&CA) is pleased to announce that its Board of Directors has elected Peter Pennoyer as the organization’s new chairman. Peter has been a member of the ICA&CA Board of Directors since 2000, working on several ICA&CA projects during years of growth and national expansion with a network of regional chapters and the advent of its Grand Central Academy of Art. Most recently, he served as Chair of the 2009 Arthur Ross Awards Jury. One of Pennoyer’s first duties will be to play host to the Holiday Party and Benefit Auction on December 5, 2009 in New York City. Commenting on Mr. Pennoyer’s election, ICA&CA’s President, Paul Gunther said that, “Gil Schafer III and Anne Fairfax have set a high standard of board chairmanship during the last decade. I know they share my gratitude for Peter’s eagerness to step forward now and sustain these years of growth and greater educational service in the spirit of a unique mission. Peter’s determination to broaden such programs in ecumenical embrace of the links between classicism and modernism both historically and currently promise further innovation ahead.” Peter Pennoyer is an architect and author. He is principal of the eponymous thirty-member firm (www.ppapc.com). Pennoyer, his partners, and his thirty associates have designed houses and institutional projects from New York to California. The firm's work is recognized for combining an inventive spirit with an erudite grasp of architectural history and has been widely published and exhibited. With co-author Anne Walker, Pennoyer has written three books: The Architecture of Delano & Aldrich (W.W. Norton, 2003), The Architecture of Warren & Wetmore (W. W. Norton, 2006), and The Architecture of Grosvenor Atterbury (W.W. Norton, 2009). He and Anne have also written the introduction for a reprint of Frank M. Snyder’s Building Details (W.W. Norton, 2007), which is a volume in the Institute’s Classical America Series in Art and Architecture. He has contributed articles and reviews to Architectural Digest, Perspectives on Architecture, Period Homes, the New-York Journal of American History, and the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. Pennoyer has been chairman of scholarship committees at the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation. He currently serves on the boards of directors of The Morgan Library & Museum and the Mrs. Giles Whiting Foundation, as well as a National Peer in the Excellence in Architecture Program of the General Services Administration. Born and raised in New York City, he earned both his BA and Masters of Architecture at Columbia University.
