Throughout the month of October, major auction houses are gearing up for sales across the country and abroad. Editor at Large pulled a selection of upcoming auctions from Christie’s, Bonhams, Doyle and Sotheby’s in the next few weeks that offer a range of treasures from giltwood bergeres to master paintings, as well as the contents of two designers’ private collections.
Arts & Textiles of the Islamic & Indian Worlds (Christie’s, October 10, London)
In honor of Islamic Art Week, Christie’s is hosting the Arts & Textiles of the Islamic & Indian Worlds sale. According to Romain Pingannaud, Head of the Islamic Art Department, a watered-steel dagger (kard), a Nasrid fall front cabinet and a complete Almoravid section of 60 volumes are the major highlights. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m.
Period Art & Design (Bonhams, October 12, San Francisco)
Bonhams’ Period Art & Design sale features European paintings and works on paper, modern and contemporary furnishings and furniture and decorative arts. Highlights include an Italian bone inlaid and ebonized desk, a pair of Swedish Neoclassical parcel gilt walnut armchairs and a George III chinoiserie decorated tall case clock. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m.
Forever Chic (Christie's, October 14, New York)
Christie's New York is set to present this curated design sale which will celebrate timeless style from modern luxury to the enduring appeal of the ancient. This innovative auction will encompass lighting, furniture, one-off design pieces, sculpture, Chinese works of art, pop-art and antiquities. Highlights include a Macassar ebony and silvered bronze daybed, a pair of French cow horn and hide low chairs, and wrought-iron and frosted glass entrance doors and side panels. Estimates range from $800 to $150,000. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m.
Interiors by Nicolas Dufor (Christie’s, October 14, Paris)
Nicolas Dufour, who has worked with Alberto Pinto for more than 13 years, has curated the first of the all-new Interiors sales at Christie’s. With his eclectic taste and talent for interior design, he has selected paintings, furniture and works of art and created interiors that reflect his inspiration. The highlight of the selection, which he also chose for the cover of the catalogue, is a 20th century Indian door. Made of wood and ivory, it represents the wide range of lots offered in the Interiors sale. Further highlights include four chromogenic prints by Walter Niedermayr representing the glacier of la Grande Motte, six etchings by Sam Szafran entitled Escaliers, and stylish 18th century Italian furniture from a collection from the South of France. The sale begins at 10:30 a.m.
Asian Decorative Arts (Bonhams, October 14, San Francisco)
Bonhams’ Asian and Decorative Arts sale features paintings, photography, furniture, painted pottery, ceramics and other Asian decorative objects. Highlights of this sale include a rare pair of celadon glazed dishes, a four-panel hardwood screen inlaid with porcelain plaques and a blue and white Rouleau vase. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m.
Collection of Acclaimed Fashion Designer Adolfo (Doyle, October 15, New York)
Doyle New York is set to auction off a massive collection of furniture, decorations and old master painting from the private collection of acclaimed fashion designer Adolfo. In a career spanning fifty years, Adolfo created his signature suits, hats, dresses, coats and accessories for many of the world’s best-dressed women, from the Duchess of Windsor to First Lady Nancy Reagan. Each piece up for auction was individually selected by the designer to occupy a unique place in his home. Portraits of elegantly dressed aristocrats of the Ancien Régime line the walls of the expansive grand salon, and French giltwood bergeres and fauteuils are arranged for intimate conversations. In designing his home—as he did with his signature suits—Adolfo has created a sensation of luxury. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m.
The Autumn Antique and Picture Sale (Bonhams, October 16, Edinburgh)
This fall-themed sale presented by Bonhams features antique statues, clocks, lighting, boxes and furniture as well as many paintings and works of art. Highlights of the sale include a burr-elm centre table circa 1995, a Howard & Sons Victorian walnut day bed, a large Regency and later mahogany triple pedestal dining table, and an important cherry wood centre table. The sale begins at 11:00 a.m.
Kentshire: A Legendary Collection (Sotheby’s, October 18, New York)
Founded in 1940, Kentshire has become synonymous with the very best of English furniture and Sotheby’s has a varied collection up for sale. Some highlights include an important pair of George II pier mirrors in the manner of Matthias Lock and an Italian specimen marble top by Giacomo Raffaelli on a William IV ormolu and cast-iron base. The range of furniture and objects carries estimates spanning from $1,000 – 100,000 with the majority of works being sold without reserve—a unique opportunity for new and established collectors to acquire the very best from these connoisseurs. The sale begins at 10:00 a.m.
