Architecture, design and art converge in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn as the borough’s preeminent design event, BKLYN Designs, is the first show to kick off this year's NYCxDESIGN with its May 8 opening at the Brooklyn Expo Center. BKLYN Designs, founded by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce back in 2003, was one of the first design fairs to emerge out of one of New York's fieriest creative hotbeds, and this year welcomes designers from throughout the area: Robert Sukrachand and Noble Goods' handmade furniture, stunning metal sculptures from Hadar Metal Design, Casa Kids' children's furniture, Urban Chandy and Robert Debbane light fixtures and choice fabrics from Au Retour and Bolé Road Textiles, to name a few. Three days' worth of innovative programming will occur in the theatre and other specially designed lounges, with 14 panels discussing the borough's leaders in all things design.

The event's keynote, “Creative Brooklyn: The Evolution from Studio to Supplier,” to be held May 8 from 6 to 7p.m., will delve into the business behind Brooklyn design, moderated by Metropolis Publisher/Editor in Chief Susan S. Szenasy along with Rockwell Group’s Thom Forsyth, Rich Brilliant Willing’s Charles Brill and Brooklyn designer Louis Lim. Following the keynote at 7 to 9 p.m., the opening night party will toast with Brooklyn Winery and Threes Brewing refreshments to the tune of music by Memos and a live audiovisual performance developed just for the show by Rote Productions.
AphroChic's pop-up lounges
Throughout the three-day show, attendees can explore a variety of pop-up lounges and installations, from a play area for kids featuring the Imagination Playground and creative installations by SITU Studio to the AphroChic Remix Lounge, which is presented by AphroChic along with ColorHouse, Rent Patina and Saatchi Art support. Shoppers can discover made-in-Brooklyn merchandise throughout the BKLYN BUYS marketplace, which will be stocked with goods from independent area designers the likes of Bronsen, History & Industry, Lesh, Pico Design and more.
