The second issue of new quarterly magazine Business of Home, which was published by Editor at Large last week, delved into three cover-story scoops: recent mergers and acquisitions of design firms and brands; the business of licensing; and the current shakeup happening within the online antiques industry.

“As we planned our winter edition of Business of Home, we could feel the thrill and anxiety of the epic and often unpredictable swings of Sophomore Effort, as every music critic likes to dub the follow-up effort,” explains editor in chief Arianne Nardo of the second issue’s focus. “Just like every band who comes out like a rocket then has go back into the studio and turn out a second album, we went back to our roots. This issue was more ambitious in content as we took on two of the biggest topics in the industry: design licensing and the world of online antiques. They are layered, complex forces of their own, and honestly, every page could have been devoted to these two heavyweights.”
“One of the most affirming moments for me,” shares Nardo, “was recognizing just how considered and labored and time-consuming both endeavors happen to be. Logically, we know that a collection of lighting doesn’t just manifest from a sketchbook, just like a few great antique finds don’t translate into a five-star business that designers want to source. It’s no surprise that the pros make it look easy. Working closely on these stories proved that an overnight sensation is really just a myth. Hard, incessant work is what actually matters, even if it is creative.”
Returning BOH columns and categories included Show-Rumors, a rundown of newly opened showrooms; Trade Tales, featuring advice by and for designers; and The Scene, with photographic snippets of industry parties and events. The first issue of Business of Home was published in winter 2016, and the next will appear in the spring.
