With the winter trade show season in full swing, designers are scoping out trends and new-to-market products in Paris, Las Vegas, New York City and last but not least Toronto.
Now in its 16th year, Canada’s annual Interior Design Show (IDS14) kicks off tonight with a preview and auction benefitting the ONEXONE children’s foundation and runs through January 26. Kirsten Korhani of KORHANI home has created a showcase of designs for the event. The official "After Party" takes place at the IDS Design Hotel, Hotel Le Germain, (30 Mercer St. Toronto) from 11:00 p.m. onwards.
The next day, Friday, January 24, is to-the-trade only and will recognize Patrizia Moroso, creative director of the Italian furniture brand Moroso, as this year’s International Guest of Honor. She will give a talk at 1:00 p.m. Other presentations include Dr. Markus Miele and Dr. Reinhard Zinkann of Miele at 12:00 p.m.; Dennis Askins, creative director of Successful Living from Diesel Home at 3:00 p.m.; and New York-based designer Dror Benshetrit at 5:00 p.m.
Saturday, January 25, and Sunday, January 26, are open to the public and include talks by Sami Ruotsalainen, designer for Marimekko at 12:00 p.m.; interior designer Muriel Brandolini at 2:00 p.m.; and architect and designer Rafael De Cardenas at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday; followed by Lynda Reeves, president of House & Home magazine with Kelvin Browne, director of the Gardiner Museum at 12:00 p.m.; Suzanne Dimma and Mark Challen of House & Home at 1:30 p.m.; and TV personality Sarah Richardson with Challen at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
Studio North exhibitor pieces
Numerous exhibits run throughout the show, including the 12th anniversary of Studio North. Originally introduced to support Canada’s design scene, it features feature 60 Canadian and international designers exhibiting one-off and custom collections of furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles and surface design in a gallery-like installation.
A concept space will spotlight lighting as the driving force behind the interior design of a space in the exhibition, “See the Light.” These four leading design studios have partnered with top lighting manufacturers to create four spaces: Cheryl Torrenueva for Luminart, MHouse Inc. for Suite 22 Interiors, MSDS Studio for YLighting and WilliamsCraig Inc. for Illuminating Experiences.
Designboom mart will return with 30 local and international emerging design talents who will display over 200 objects, from household items, jewelry and accessories to small furniture items and lighting objects.
ISD13's Creative Class
Located on the main level of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Creative Class will feature the cutting-edge work of industrial design, interior design and architecture students from the top design schools around the country. Participating schools include: Art Institute of Vancouver, George Brown College, Humber College, OCAD, Ryerson University, Student Design Association (University of Alberta) and University of Calgary.
Show hours are 7:00 – 11:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 23, for the opening night party; 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. for trade day on Friday, January 24; 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 25; and 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 26.
