Ceramics of Italy competition winners announced

Six honors were awarded in this year’s Ceramics of Italy Tile Competition, for the categories Residential, Commercial and Institutional. Designed to honor “North American architects and designers who display a devotion to and understanding of the value of Italian ceramics in architecture and design,” the contest, now in its 23rd year, was sponsored by Confindustria Ceramica and the Italian Trade Agency.


Residential Grand Prize winner Shinberg.Levinas Architects, Turnberry Residence, Arlington, Virginia

Shinberg.Levinas won the Residential category for its penthouse condominium renovation, reimagined as a home for Italian furniture and a small art collection. Residential Honorable Mention awards went to Dubbledam Architecture + Design’s residence in Toronto and Geoffrey A. Blatt Interior Design & Decoration’s Bridgehampton private pool. Gensler’s new Kaye Scholer headquarters in New York earned top honors in the Commercial category, with honorable mention going to Rottet Studio for the Viking Star cruise ship. The winner of the Institutional category was ARK, for the UJA Federation Community Complex.

Judges awarded the winning projects based on aesthetic beauty, functionality and sustainability of materials.


Commercial Honorable Mention Rottet Studio,
Viking Star cruise ship

The grand prize includes a trip to Italy to attend Cersaie, the largest international exhibition of ceramic tile and bathroom furnishings, in addition to a cash prize. Contractors and distributors for winning projects also receive a cash prize.
