With the debut of its “Chairish City Guide,” the online consignment shop Chairish.com will be selling vintage finds from local furniture shops in Los Angeles. Over the next few months, Chairish City Guides will roll out in Brooklyn, Dallas/Austin, Chicago, Atlanta and Miami/Palm Beach, giving buyers access to vintage shops and discoveries across the country.
To get the scoop on the new venture, this reporter spoke with Chairish co-founder and chief curator Anna Brockway, who shared her inspiration and vision for the guides.
What inspired these city guides?
I love the unique stores that make up the style microclimates of a city. It's how I get to know a place. As Chairish grows, I enjoy getting to know the cool shops within neighborhoods, city by city, and bringing them on our site as sellers. We wanted to share our hit list with the design community and introduce these shops through their storefronts on Chairish. Now you can literally shop these stores anytime, anywhere, without leaving your home.
Will the guides be both content and commerce?
I think when it comes to shopping for beautiful items; it’s hard to separate the two! When I travel, it takes hours to set up a shopping itinerary, so this idea is to share what we learned and make it so you can skip the plane trip and access these great stores from home, plus enjoy the amazing (and sometimes crazy) history behind the merchandise and the owners themselves.
Will this be a "shop within a shop" experience for users?
Most vintage and consignment shop owners love finding and presenting beautiful items but don't want the hassle of maintaining an e-commerce website. They are looking for a marketplace to do the heavy lifting for them. We provide a free, totally customizable storefront with a permanent URL, a simple interface to allow the seller to directly negotiate prices with the buyer, a turnkey delivery service AND a fast and effective way to upload items (it takes two minutes thanks to our app). By working with Chairish, sellers are free to do what they do best and we take care of the rest.
Will you focus on stores now?
Chairish welcomes both professional and private sellers. Our only criterion is fabulous inventory! And yes, stores will be an important part of this.
Do the stores follow the same commission model?
Listing with Chairish is always free no matter who you are. Sellers pay Chairish a standard commission rate of 20% and ONLY when an item is sold.
By how much will this increase your inventory?
When we launched one year ago, we had a mere 30 items on the site. We are now at more than 6,000 and we see this increasing exponentially in the future. There's no shortage of beautiful goodies out there!
