The showhouse, in the Palm Springs neighborhood Indian Canyons, will run in tandem with Modernism Week, which this past year attracted more than 60,000 visitors hailing from 20 countries. Kennedy’s goal for the project is to raise $100,000 via ticket sales and special events to support Modernism Week and other preservation efforts.
“This year is even bigger, and hopefully better!” says Kennedy. “While the last two houses were about 2,500 square feet, this one is over 4,000 square feet. So, it is an expanded palette that will allow for more designers and more creativity, which will hopefully translate into more ideas that can inspire the 4,000 people who visit the house and the countless folks who see it in print and on social media.”
The house was designed by Holden & Johnson and built in 1982 on a fairway of the Indian Canyons Golf Resort, a hangout among certain Rat Pack–era celebrities, including Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra. One of the last custom homes in the neighborhood, it belongs to Jerry and Marilyn Nies, of Vancouver, Washington.
The showhouse is presented by Traditional Home and California Homes magazines. Shares Traditional Home editor in chief Ann Maine, “Traditional Home is thrilled to partner with Christopher Kennedy and all the talented designers he has assembled to transform this amazing property.”
Who is Kennedy most excited to see at work? “They are all fabulous, of course!” he shares. “Naturally, I am eager to see what Martyn Lawrence Bullard puts together; he has told me that it will be very ‘glam-glam.’ Also, I think it is fun that we have tastemakers from the fashion world creating rooms: popular blogger Kelly Golightly and fashion personality Carson Kressley are both creating rooms. I have seen their design boards and they look quite fabulous.”
