Yale University opens its doors to guests of the American Institute of Architects, New York Chapter (AIANY), this Sunday, Jan. 13 at 11:30 a.m., for a guided tour of the George Nelson Exhibit, Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art.
Christopher Pullman, former graphic design project leader at the office of George Nelson, and the AIANY Interiors Committee will be guiding a tour, which will examine over 120 pieces of Nelson’s work.
Titled “George Nelson: Writer, Designer, Teacher,” the exhibition celebrates the life and work of the iconic designer and Yale alum, featuring some of his defining landmarks of American Style: the marshmallow sofa, the office cubicle and the idea of the ‘family room.’
The exhibition is organized according to five principal design sectors of Nelson’s multifaceted career: home design and furnishings; graphic and corporate design; office furniture; exhibition design and his activities as a writer, filmmaker and lecturer.

Following the morning tour, guests will break for lunch and then reconvene at 2:00 p.m. at the Yale University Art Gallery, where Duncan Hazard, Ennead Architects’ Management Partner, and Todd van Varick, Ennead’s project manager for construction, will tour attendees through the recently opened, renovated and expanded museum project; which includes the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn.
Finally, Rob Rothblatt, AIANY Interiors Committee member and Architecture Design Director at AECOM, will lead a tour through Louis Kahn’s Yale Center for British Art, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
The price for the tour is $25 for AIA members; $35 for non-members; and $5 for students. For more information on the tour and to register, click here.
