City Guide: Burlington, presented by The Shade Store
Feb 11, 2016

The design bug is catching hold in Burlington, Mass. Interior designer Melissa Hammond, principal of Hammond Design, a full-service firm in the Greater Boston area, shares, “Burlington is experiencing an explosion in growth at the retail level. Many new design stores are cropping up in the area, making it a convenient place to shop outside of Boston.” Hammond, who has appeared on HGTV’s House Hunters: Renovation, offers to play local guide in EAL’s latest City Guide: Burlington, presented by The Shade Store.

What are the top design stores and home boutiques in the area?
In addition to The Shade Store, which opens today at 22 Third Avenue, Burlington, the Greater Boston area is a growing draw for designers. Hammond, who has used The Shade Store’s Roman shades, says, “I am a Boston Design Center junkie! It’s my go-to place for design projects.”

As for hidden finds, Hammond says, “I also enjoy shopping for tile at Tile Showcase in Watertown, and plumbing fixtures at Monique’s, also in Watertown.” Another recommendation: “I love shopping in the Back Bay and South End. I also have found some hidden gems at Comina in Concord.”

Where do you find inspiration?
“I am an outdoor enthusiast, so I find inspiration in nature,” says Hammond, who also relies on design magazines and online sources such as Houzz. Nature aficionados can seek inspiration in the Greater Boston area’s many parks and nature preserves, like the Habitat Education Center & Wildlife Sanctuary, Boston Nature Center & Wildlife Sanctuary and Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary.

Where do you take clients for lunch or coffee?
Trade, in the Boston Seaport District, is Hammond’s go-to for client meetings. “Great vibe, excellent food!” she raves.

The new Burlington Shade Store showroom is located at 22 Third Avenue, Burlington, MA 01803. Hours are Monday through Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The phone number is (800) 754-1455.
