On the occasion of The Shade Store’s opening a new showroom in Winter Park, Florida, EAL sat down with Marc Thee, principal and co-founder of Marc-Michaels Interior Design. Thee talked about his take on the local design scene, including his own bits of inspiration, his favorite client-worthy coffee joints, and of course, the top shopping destinations in the area.

What are the top design stores and home boutiques in your area?
Locally, we like to shop at Canvas, Restoration Hardware, Pottery Barn and Elephant Walk for one-of-a-kind items and antiques. Iconic Park Avenue in Winter Park has the best mix of boutique stores. Ivanhoe Village, just east of downtown Orlando, has an eclectic mix of furniture shops from vintage midcentury to rustic to Balinese.
Where do you find inspiration—parks, museums, public spaces?
Boutique hotels and restaurants during our travels around the world, including The Edition in Miami Beach, Gramercy Park Hotel in New York, and the Peninsula Hotel in Shanghai.
Where do you take clients for lunch or coffee?
Hillstone, situated on the banks of Lake Killarney, is the perfect spot to bring clients. The sunsets over the lake are beautiful, and the modern yet warm architecture creates the perfect setting for a meal. Dexter’s in Hannibal Square is also an office favorite!
