The design industry is full of new and changing faces. Editor at Large is tracking who's coming and who's going. Below are a few changes of note.
Carlos Alberini has resigned as co-CEO of Restoration Hardware, and has accepted the position of Chairman and CEO of Lucky Brand, which is being acquired by Leonard Green & Partners. He will remain on the Restoration Hardware board and will stay with the company until Jan. 31 to assist with the transition. Gary Friedman, Restoration Hardware’s Chairman and co-CEO, said the company will begin shortly to search for Alberini’s successor.
Gracious Home has appointed Rob Morrison to the role of chief operating officer. Morrison had been senior VP of stores and operations at Lumber Liquidators since January 2006. He was also president of Artistic Tile from 2004 to 2005.
Ron Kass was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer Hunter Douglas North America. He will continue to report directly to Marv Hopkins, President and Chief Executive Officer, who is being promoted to Chairman in addition to his ongoing role as CEO. Kass, who first joined Hunter Douglas in 2005, currently serves as President of both the Hunter Douglas Design Products Group and the Independent Fabricator Group of companies and as Executive Vice President of Marketing, where he guides and directs all brand marketing, advertising and communications for the Company. He came to Hunter Douglas after serving as President and CEO of The Robert Allen Group, and previously as VP of Product Management, Senior VP of Marketing and President of Knoll Europe.
In the newly created position of Development Officer, Carl Davis Jr. will lead development efforts for the Sustainable Furnishings Council in 2014. Davis will work with the SFC Board of Directors to advance a recently adopted four-pronged strategy that will increase SFC’s impact, reach and profile. Prior to joining SFC, Davis helped organizations such as the Climate Reality Project and The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian meet their strategic goals through his Washington, D.C.-based consultancy, Think Social Change LLC. He has formerly held leadership positions in development and communications at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Indiana.
Kevin Bowman, Senior VP of Sales at Stanley Furniture, has stepped down to pursue other leadership opportunities. He joined Stanley in October 2006 as VP of Sales and was promoted to his last role in 2009.
Nambé has started to search for a new President and CEO, replacing Bob Varakian, who is now Group President of Lifetime Brands’ cutlery/cutting boards and cookware/bakeware divisions. In the interim, board member Wayne Badovinus, who is the former CEO of Design Within Reach and Eddie Bauer, and Angie Miller, Senior VP of Sales, will manage the company.
Lori Sheldon, formerly the National Home Furnishings Director at Luxe Interiors + Design, is now Traditional Home's Home Furnishings Director. Katherine Scully, formerly the New York Director at Luxe Interiors + Design, has been promoted to National Home Furnishings Director there.
Christopher Chafin has been named press officer at Parsons The New School for Design. He was previously a freelance journalist for Village Voice Media, The Awl and Blackbook Media and The Atlantic. Deborah Kirschner, who was formerly in the position, has accepted a new position at the Prospect Park Alliance in Brooklyn, New York, where she will oversee marketing and communications.
Hansgrohe North America has hired Luky “Jade” Ng as Design Studio Manager at Axor NYC. With nearly eight years of experience in design and plumbing, she will oversee the day-to-day management of the studio, assist architects, designers and consumers, and provide design consultations and personalized specifications. In related news, Hansgrohe N.A. National Sales Manager Cindy Welsh has stepped down after 14 years of service. Sharon Murray, Hansgrohe N.A. National Sales Manager, projects and hospitality, will fill in until the company hires a replacement.
D.B. Kim has left his post at Daroff Design in Philadelphia and accepted a new position as a VP, hospitality design, at the Wanda Group in Beijing, China, beginning January 13th.
Phil Mehringer as the new Director of Product Development for Kimball Office. Mehringer has spent the past eight years as the Executive Leader of Product Development for OFS Brands.
Mike Johnson is 3form's new Director of Sustainability. He'll be leading initiatives such as Path to Zero and the Full Circle program.
