David Adjaye premieres African-inspired collection for Knoll
Jul 24, 2015

Architect David Adjaye, inspired by both African heritage and classic modern design, premiered a line of fabrics for Knoll with KnollTextiles Creative Director Dorothy Cosonas, released in June. “All of the products I'm putting out are things that weren't out there before, and I think are necessary," Adjaye says. "Ultimately I want the freedom to have the widest choice to express my design ideas."

Textiles from Adjaye's new collection

“By taking David out of architecture and into textiles, we translated his point of view on our geometric and organic systems through varied weave structures and construction techniques,” Cosonas said. “The end result is an extraordinary range of patterns and textures, each named after a place in Africa that David cherishes.”

The collection is inspired by geography, nature and culture, along with objects and textiles from the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and its launch coincides with an exhibition at the Cooper Hewitt curated by Adjaye and called “Adjaye Selects.” The exhibit is on view through February 14, 2016.
