Design Basel celebrates collectible design for the 10th year

Design Miami/Basel was this year characterized by a continued focus on collectible design. Held June 16 to 21, the fair hosted notable names including artist Tracy Emin, Charles and Helen Schwab, businesswoman and magazine owner Dasha Zhukova, owner of art-house publisher Phaidon Richard Schlagman, art dealers Barry Friedman and Phillipe Ségalot and gallerist Rachel Lehmann, among others. An array of other installations and immersive exhibits (such as Design at Large, curated by André Balazs), pop-ups and other collaborations introduced collectors to a wealth of products and ideas.

Collaborative highlights included Jean Prouvé’s posthumous modular building with Richard Rogers of Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners; LAFFANOUR - Galerie Downtown with Ron Arad's Bookcase; and Gareth Neal, who presented two wooden vessels created using advanced computer modeling software in collaboration with architect Zaha Hadid at Sarah Myerscough Gallery.

Design Basel celebrates collectible design for the 10th year

A number of galleries from around the globe participated, including a number of new exhibitors. Yu Wang, founder of Gallery ALL, noted that the fair was an ideal opportunity for sharing Chinese design with an international market: “This is the biggest platform we have to expose Chinese design to a larger audience. Design Miami/ provides the opportunity for a global audience to learn about contemporary design and designers from China. Building upon the success of this fair, more and more Chinese designers will have the opportunity to show their work to an international audience, which will have a marked effect on the whole design scene, introducing a new region of design to the existing market,” adding, “We sold almost everything we came to the fair with.”
Another first-time exhibitor, Marc Heiremans, shared, “Aside from receiving the admiration of many visitors, our booth was also a commercial success. Four of our major pieces (ranging between 40,000 and 60,000 Euro) were sold on the first two days, while additional sales were concluded in the following days.”
