New publishing company Bauer and Dean will launch with a series of reference books on interior design and architecture that are based on the 18th-century tradition of pattern books. Each volume will contain line drawings illustrating traditional American upholstery, lighting, paneling, flooring, doors, windows, etc.
Volumes for 2011 include: Upholstery, Lighting, Paneling, Fireplaces, and Italian Furniture; for 2012: American Doors, Staircases, Flooring, and Built-Ins; and for 2013: American Windows and Wall Treatments. Other series planned for the Bauer and Dean include Photography (of fashion designers, interior designers, etc.), Inventions and Inspiration.
Lighting will be written by lighting designer Thomas Fuchs; Paneling by interior designer Alex Papachristidis; Italian Furniture Designs by antiques dealer and collector Helen Costantino Fioratti; among others.
"It is important to note while there are beautiful books being launched on interiors highlighting designers careers there has yet to be a series published that follows the aesthetic of a coffee table book while providing designers with key and information they are able to utilize for themselves and their clients," said Fuchs.
"With drawings for the book I am able to emphasize certain characteristics to express points I am trying to make to the reader. The style characteristics in lighting allow me to correct or enhance any details or inconsistencies that may not be able to be seen by the naked eye in a photograph. In a world where end users are becoming interior designers themselves, this series provides an architectural frame of how to implement and understand design (elements) combining it with personal taste. This series goes beyond a DIY (do it yourself) guide by giving the depth and intricate nuances that magazines and coffee table books do not provide."
"There is currently no place a designer can go and get in-depth information. Visual examples in books and on the internet are almost non existent. A typical book will offer 3-5 patterns; these books will offer hundreds of variations," said designer, draftsman, author and historian Peter Joel Harrison. "It's what the design industry greatly needs."
Other series planned for the Bauer and Dean include Photography (of fashion designers, interior designers, etc.), Inventions and Inspiration.
