Designjunction, Modus partner on auction to help refugees
Sep 21, 2016

Designers, architects and artists are joining Who’s Casper?, an  online auction to raise funds for refugees. The auction, which runs today until September 25, is a collaboration between the Designjunction fair (September 22 to 25) and British furniture company Modus and will benefit the charity Movement on the Ground. The Who’s Casper? initiative asks participants to customize the Casper stool, which was designed by Michael Sodeau and manufactured by Modus from recycled cork.

Participants include designers Sir Kenneth Grange, Tom Dixon, Ross Lovegrove and Moritz Waldemeyer; artists Jon Burgerman, Barnaby Barford, Alex Chinneck, James Joyce, Nicolas Burrows and Anthony Burrill; architects Autoban, Snarkitecture and Studio Egret West; and illustrators Vic Lee, Esther Cox and Chrissie Macdonald.

“We are delighted to support such an important cause through Who’s Casper?, which uses the talents of designers, architects and artists to highlight the importance of the individual, whatever their identity,” says Deborah Spencer, managing director of Designjunction.

As Designjunction explains, “Casper’s playful design incorporates two finger-sized holes that make the stool easy to maneuver as well as creating an unexpectedly human and hopeful expression. This suggestion of personhood makes Casper particularly appropriate for the project, which draws attention to the dehumanization of refugees fleeing persecution and poverty and the anonymity of the displaced. Instead, Who’s Casper? stresses the importance of seeing refugees as individuals. Each participant has been asked to respond to this theme without significantly altering the structure of the stool.”

The custom stools are being displayed at the Modus stand at the Designjunction fair, part of the London Design Festival. The Who’s Casper? initiative follows May’s Where’s Casper? campaign, which auctioned off Casper stools in a silent auction benefiting Movement on the Ground.
