In light of last fall’s successful Design Leadership Summit in New York City, the Design Leadership Network is at it again and will bring four days of exhilarating programming to top-tier interior designers in the Big Apple, Nov. 4-7.
“The Design Leadership Summit is an opportunity to bring the leaders of our industry together to share ideas and learn,” said Peter Sallick, CEO of Design Investors, Waterworks, and Dering Hall, as well as one of the summit’s co-hosts. “The design world is continually evolving and we want to respond by fostering growth within our industry. Compelling programming and a venue to build personal, high-level relationships helps leaders in this community look forward to opportunities for their business.”

Sallick and his co-hosts Kate Kelly Smith, SVP Group Publishing Director of Hearst Design Group, and John Edelman, CEO of Design Within Reach, have announced the programming for the ninth annual Summit.
To kick-off the four days of festivities, the Summit will begin with a lively conversation between American author and iconic New Yorker Fran Lebowitz and Editor-in-Chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine Deborah Needleman, which will take place on Tuesday evening at Cedar Lake contemporary ballet’s landmark building.
The next day’s events will take place at the United Nations building, beginning with an address by the Assistant Secretary General of the UN, Michael Adlerstein.
Throughout the day, attendees will also hear from Vanity Fair architecture critic Paul Goldberger, who will talk about the “Image of America Abroad,” as well as Editor in Chief of Elle Decor Michael Boodro, who will discuss international design. Later, artist and architect Maya Lin will discuss art and the environment, and Surface Magazine Executive Editor Spencer Bailey will chat with Dutch architecture photographer Iwan Baan about how photography shapes life experiences.
The day will conclude at Parsons—The New School where guests will attend a special cocktail reception and awards presentation to celebrate the winners of the first-ever Design Leadership Award.

“What’s unique about the Design Leadership Summit is the way it brings together the top talents in design and architecture with the leaders of our industry’s businesses,” said Smith. “The speakers and events provide an in-depth look at the forces influencing our design culture. Through these shared experiences we can determine our roles in the design world as we move forward.”
Day three of the Summit will take attendees to Brooklyn, where they will hear from Michael Phillips, President of Jamestown. Joel Towers, the Executive Dean of Parsons—The New School, will then discuss the state of design education with Miodrag Mitrasinovic, Associate Professor of Design Studies at Parsons—The New School; Cameron Tonkinwise, Associate Dean of Sustainability at Carnegie Mellon University; and Dr. Sharon E. Sutton, University of Washington Professor of Architecture, Urban Design and Planning.
Anne Hellman, author of Design Brooklyn, will discuss the changing Brooklyn culture with Brooklyn resident Mike D (Diamond) of the Beastie Boys. Hellman will also moderate a discussion between various design professionals living in Brooklyn, including architect Jeff Sherman.

Later in the day, attendees will have the chance to break out into groups to discuss the future of design, before hearing from Bre Pettis, who will discuss 3D printing, and Zac Bruner, co-founder of the energy-efficient experimental spirit distillery Industry City Distillery, who talk about the craft beer culture of Brooklyn, as well as the inspiration and process behind founding his company.
Attendees will also have the chance to celebrate at Brooklyn Bowl on Thursday evening after two full days of discussion.
On Friday, along with tour partners Wanted Design, the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, Collective Design, and the Museum of Arts and Design, the Design Leadership Network will offer an inside look into the studios and spaces of leading makers, creators, artists and innovators along with a walking tour of some of Brooklyn’s most architecturally significant neighborhoods.
"I am truly excited about DLN 2014,” Edelman said. “Any chance to learn, to be inspired, and to mingle with our industry’s highest stars is rare and I feel privileged to be involved."
