This year’s Dutch Design Week (Oct 19 – 27) theme is “Now Future” which will focus on the rapidly changing design world and look to the future of 3D printers, machine made design, interactive paint and much more, and how it will all affect the world of design.
Exhibition highlights include: a furniture collaboration between designer Melanie Buatois and different expert craftsmen; collections from seven young design studios on the rise; handmade stools that feature wool from Dutch sheep breeds; architecture students testing the difference between creating by hand or by machine; designer Marina Savochkina’s experiment with brick design; and a collective of Dutch designers emphasizing sustainable social design through “Call it Design.”
Numerous special events and discussions will take place throughout the week.
Acclaimed international designer Amsterdam Marcel Wanders will ascend the stage with Dutch Design Award nominee Sander Wassink. Together the pair will explore ideas including the role of design today, art versus commerce, the term “Dutch Design,” and the challenges of this industry. Studio Zeitgeist founder Farid Tabarki will moderate the evening.
“Now Future, Action Now!” will feature Daan Roosegaarde, Markus Kayser, Jos Stuyfzand and Ad van Berlo of the same successful design agency in Eindhoven. In this live “talk show” in the Klokgebouw at Strijp-S, these renowned speakers will give their views on the future and each other for attendees.
The DDW bloggers tour during Dutch Design Week is a first this year, and will launch on Monday, October 21. Bloggers include: Ulrike Jurklies, an independent designer and producer of custom-designed products under the label mo man tai; Jasmine van Weenen, a project manager in the creative industries; and Willemijn de Wit, a creative director, talent scout and buyer at the concept store YOU ARE HERE.
