Design Forum Finland has chosen Mari Isopahkala and Iina Vuorivirta as the recipients of the 2013 Young Designers of the Year Award. Established in 2000, the Award, along with 5,000 euros, is presented to a designer who has demonstrated a new creative vision and expertise.
Mari Isopahkala and Iina Vuorivirta
Isopahkala is a freelance designer who studied furniture and interior design at the Lahti Institute of Design and graduated with Master of Arts in Art and Design from the University of Art and Design Helsinki. According to the judges, Isopahkala represents traditional authorship in design while boldly leading it forward and crossing boundaries, with a solid professional approach to work and output.
Vuorivirta studied product design at the Lahti Institute of Design and Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. She is currently working on her Master of Arts degree at the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. The judges particularly noted the surprising and different nature of Vuorivirta's work when choosing her as winner. Seeking new expression and new forms of design, Vuorivirta challenges the design field with her alternative ways of designing.
