The Institute of Design and Fine Art in Lahti, Finland, has collected 13 student prototypes of furniture for the exhibit UNI ON 2010 (“dreams of 2010”). The exhibition comprises chairs, tables, lighting objects and racks, each of which introduce novel takes on the ordinary functions. The exhibition anticipates the World Design Capital 2012 project in a youthful spirit and with a fresh approach. Lahti is one of the participating cities in the project. The questions asked by the UNI ON 2010 designers touch upon core themes in design today. How to face the challenges of the time? What does sustainable development mean? What is sustainable aesthetics? How to make something useful, not needless? The Institute of Design and Fine Art is part of the Lahti University of Applied Sciences. The institute maintains close contacts with the design industry to answer needs of business and promote the international competitiveness of Finnish design. UNI ON 2012 was hosted by the showroom of Artek in Helsinki, an innovative contributor to modern design, building on the heritage of Alvar Aalto.
