The Skidmore, Owings & Merrill–designed, 65-story building located at 252 East 57th Street in New York features a model apartment by AD100 designer Robert Couturier. Couturier’s three-bed, 3.5-bath space, which is located on the 52nd floor, numbers over 3,000 square feet and is listed for nearly $8 million.

“Instead of creating a contemporary apartment, we wanted to balance the modern and light-filled rooms with traditional fabrics and furniture placements,” says Couturier of his approach to the space’s design, which features contemporary furniture “interspersed with antiques and strong art pieces.” He also points out, “The tension between the modern and customary made for more dynamic and interesting spaces.”

Couturier is renowned for his residential design throughout New York City, Europe, the United Kingdom, Mexico and beyond. Early in his career, he drew acclaim for a 60,000-square-foot commission, an estate on the Pacific Coast of Mexico, that became the “single greatest private commission of modern times.”

Other features of the unit include a private south-facing balcony, views from the East River to Central Park, living and dining rooms with 11-foot ceilings, white oak flooring, and a master bedroom with two large closets and an en suite bath.

Built by SOM under the creative direction of partner Roger Duffy, the tower’s shape was inspired by an iconic vase designed by Alvar Aalto. The interiors, aside from the model unit, were designed by Daniel Romualdez, and the 700-plus-foot building’s residential units start on the 36th floor. Among the amenities are the 34th Floor Club, a private club equipped with private dining rooms, a movie screening room, a gym with Pilates studio, and billiards; a 70-foot south-facing terrace; an on-site library; a pool and spa; and a relaxation room.

The building is currently listing available units starting at $3.925 million and “anticipates LEED Silver certification.”
