The Haas Brothers’ line of Hematite candles, created exclusively for Cultured magazine, are now available at Artsy.net, in 25 limited-edition sets. Each sale’s proceeds benefit the nonprofit National YoungArts Foundation, which discovers and supports next-generation artists working in the visual, literary, design and performing arts. The candles are based on the brothers’ form for their signature Hematite vases, which were some of the first pieces they created and the first they showed at a gallery.
“We initially used them as gifts to our first clients.… The way we made these forms is by taking panty hose and filling them with plaster, and then binding them with rope,” artist Niki Haas explained to Cultured. Of the designers’ inspiration for the work, he says: “We were talking with Donatella Versace about making a collection for her and we were on a bondage/leather fetish kind of kick at the time.”
