Designers, editors, retailers and buyers from the U.S. and abroad head to North Carolina once again this fall for the semi-annual High Point Market (October 13-18). The show doesn't dissappoint when it comes to buzz-worthy events, from magazine parties to showroom previews. In the coming weeks, Editor at Large's calendar will post updates on a few things you won't want to miss.
Experts share with The Editor at Large the tools to make the most of High Point Market. Find out how Gilt Home's Tom Delavan, interior designer Joe Lucas, interior designer Bunny Williams of Bee Line Home, Rue Magazine Editor Crystal Gentilello, designer Tobi Fairley Interior Design, celebrity designer Libby Langdon, and the amazing Mr. & Mrs. Howard do Market.
This year, the link between fashion design and home design is strong, and the High Point Market's Fashion Focus campaign is designed to highlight that close relationship.
“The High Point Market is our industry’s Fashion Week, defining style, trends, and innovation for the home,” says Cheminne Taylor-Smith, vice president of marketing for the High Point Market Authority (HPMA). “The Fashion Focus campaign showcases that by delivering an experience that is fresh, vibrant, and fashion-oriented through every marketing and advertising piece for the Market.”
At the April High Point Market, fashion shoots with models were held in showrooms and locations throughout Market to develop the creative for the new campaign. The images for the campaign feature a full clothing collection called Pretty Birdie by Stephanie Teague, a Greensboro, N.C.-based fashion designer who has shown her line at New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
“Stephanie’s clothing is fun and fresh, but with an edge to it,” says Taylor-Smith. “Her line has a lot of depth, which allowed us to pair pieces with different styles of furnishings. An added bonus is that the collection was created with eco-friendly and recycled materials.”
In further exploration of home fashions, HPMA and American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), has set its seminar series, Design Viewpoints, which will be presented as follows:
Sunday, Oct. 14: Lights, Camera, Action! Interior designers are the new media superstars, so how can you be part of this exciting new trend? A panel of design experts will reveal how they found their broadcast niche, and will provide tips to help you make the most of local, national, and international media. Panelists include Nathan Turner, featured on the Today Show, Extra!, and season one of Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators; Lori Dennis, co-founder of DesignCamp.com who has been on HGTV, NBC, Food Network, and Oxygen; Kelli Ellis, co-founder of DesignCamp.com, featured on TLC, HGTV, and Bravo; and Shay Geyer, design expert for Good Morning Texas since 2006. Following the presentation, Turner will sign copies of his new book, Nathan Turner’s American Style.
Monday, Oct. 15: Exclusive Research: What Your Clients Want. Exclusive research from Houzz will reveal insights into the changing behavior of consumers and how they work with interior designers. Liza Hausman, vice president of marketing for Houzz, will provide not-to-be-missed results that show what home owners say are their favorite projects, how much they are willing to spend, the demographics for consumers who are ready to hire a designer, how new tools have changed the design process, and much more. One seminar attendee will win an iPad, courtesy of Houzz.
Tuesday, Oct. 16: Outside Influences on Interior Design. Design icon and Wall Street Journal Magazine contributing editor Charlotte Moss will highlight the top influences on interior design trends, from travel and fashion, to food and culture. Moss has an incredible background in interior design, filled with accolades and awards such as Elle Decor’s Vision Award and IFDA’s Circle of Excellence Award. After the presentation, Moss will sign copies of her newest book, A Visual Life: Scrapbooks, Collages, and Inspirations.
All seminars in the Design Viewpoints Series are free to interior designers and retailers attending High Point Market. No RSVP is required, and a boxed lunch will be first-come-first-served.
Designers can also tune in digitally to the social media program, which includes the ninth Style Spotter contest. The award-winning program names home fashion trendsetters who showcase their favorite products and top trends from Market exhibitors on Pinterest, a website that lets users organize and share photos on virtual pinboards. The Spotters also present selected exhibitors with signs that highlight the Style Spotter’s name as well as a QR code and URL for the Market Pinterest board. Market attendees also participate by voting on the pinboards and products, generating “likes” or re-pinning.
The High Point Market has received international recognition for the Style Spotters and has been named one of the top brands using Pinterest. Social media and branding experts such as Blogworld, Hubspot, Social Media Today, Likable Media, eModeration, and FrontLine touted the Market’s Style Spotters program as a unique way to take advantage of brand building on Pinterest.
