Historic preservation is focus of latest Veranda issue, initiatives
May 20, 2016

Veranda has announced its historic-preservation movement, kicking off with a dedicated May/June issue and the inaugural Power of Preservation Forum, held at Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California. The three-day forum, running June 3 to 5, will include keynote speakers Kelly Lynch and Mitch Glazer, as well as presentations and roundtable conversations with designers, architects, and conservationists like Marc Appleton and Michael Devonshire.

“Historic homes are really time capsules for the work of talented craftsmen, artisans and brilliant architects, loved and cared for by people who, like us, are inspired by great design and understand the need to preserve it,” says Veranda editor in chief Clinton Smith. “It is especially exciting to host this forum in San Simeon and around Hearst Castle, which was truly a passion project for William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan, and now, as a museum, fascinates and inspires millions of visitors every year.”

The magazine issue, “Historic Homes for Modern Living,” currently on newsstands, profiles contemporary preservationists, including families re-imagining private estates and manufacturers using longstanding techniques like traditional millwork, ironwork and textiles.

“The history and landscape of beautiful properties is part of Veranda’s DNA, and we believe this initiative will act as a catalyst for an important and ongoing industry dialogue,” shares Kate Kelly Smith, Hearst Design Group senior vice president and publishing director. “This is about bringing modern ideas, research and technology to preservation. Historic preservation is an important topic in all design conversations.”
