As part of the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), New Finnish Design SCENARIOS—A Story about what Happened in the Future explores the designers, manufacturers, and products that are shaping the landscape of contemporary Finnish design.
The exhibition section focuses on the current Finnish design trends: sustainability, mobility, ethical thinking, sensory reception, technological and material innovations, and an appreciation for handicraft skills.
In addition to the furniture, lighting fixtures, and other interior design objects presented in the show; illustrated stories of the early years of the participating companies allow visitors to familiarize themselves with the ideas, inspirations, and processes found at the heart of Finnish design.
The event also includes a student workshop mapping out possible future scenarios for Finnish design, organized in collaboration with Aalto University, a FIKA espresso bar, a pop-up store selling Finnish design items, and a lounge area that features lectures and other programming.
All programs take place at 72 Gansevoort Street. The schedule is as follows:
Monday May 9: noon – 1 pm SCENARIOS lecture at Scandinavia House
Thursday May 12: noon SCENARIOS student workshop launch
Friday May 13: noon – 8 pm Event open to the public; 6 pm – 8 pm Design SCENARIOS; Pecha Kucha
Saturday May 14: 10 am – 8 pm Event open to the public; 2 pm SCENARIOS exhibition tour; 4 pm World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 image workshop
Sunday May 15: 10 am – 6 pm Event open to the public; 2 pm SCENARIOS exhibition tour
Monday May 16: 10 am – noon Urban Design SCENARIOS panel discussion; 12 pm – 6 pm Event open to the public; 2 pm World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 image workshop
Tuesday May 17: 12 pm – 6 pm Event open to the public; Pop up store and FIKA espresso bar open during the public opening hours. The student workshop will continue from Thursday to Sunday with a roundup on Sunday afternoon.
The event is part of the New Finnish Design project to promote Finnish design in North America.
