The Grand Prize Winner, Ed Chew, will receive a $1000 cash prize for his Tetra Pak lamp made of recycled drink cartons; the Reader's Choice Award winner, Carolyn Joan Lau, will receive $500 for her Glowing Nourishment Lamp made of recycled plastic yogurt bottles; and the Third place winners, Shay & Yael Mer, will receive $250 for their versatile cork Pinha Lamp.
All six winners, including three runners-up; Gilles Eichenbaum for his Glowing Teapot, Andrea Carvajal for his Fugu-Inspired Blowfish Lamp, and Pierre Ospina for his Blossom Bulbs Lamp, will receive a Philips Ambient LED bulb and will be published on the Inhabitat website.
Glowing Nourishment Lamp
The Bright Ideas panel of judges was composed of some of today’s brightest green thinkers and design industry professionals, included Dwell Magazine’s editor-in-chief Sam Grawe, Treehugger founder Graham Hill, Metropolis Magazine’s editor-in-chief Susan Szenasy, and Inhabitat's editor-in-chief Jill Fehrenbacher.
Tetra Pak Lamp
"Ed Chew’s Tetra Pak lamp was a clear standout in the Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition for its inspired use of materials and amazing craftsmanship; the designer painstakingly cut, folded and assembled hundreds of Tetrapak containers into this flawlessly geometric lamp," said Inhabitat editor-in-chief. "This is a shining example of upcycled design that is so professional and well-executed that you can’t tell it's made out of junk - but once you realize this, the story becomes even more impressive."
