Innovative chair designs on view at High Point University
Aug 12, 2014

The School of Art and Design at High Point University (HPU) in High Point, North Carolina will present “High Point University Explores the Art of Seating,” an exhibition of innovative chairs designed by HPU students and faculty, opening on Monday, August 18.
The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Reynolda House Museum of American Art’s special exhibit, “The Art of Seating: Two Hundred Years of American Design.” More than 40 iconic chairs featured at Reynolda provided a springboard of inspiration for the chair prototypes designed by a handful of HPU students and faculty.

“The quality of work from our students and faculty is of the highest caliber,” said Maxine Campbell, director and curator of the Sechrest Gallery and instructor in the School of Art and Design. “These students gained invaluable hands-on, real-world experience in producing work for a contextual setting.”
“In exhibits like these, faculty have the freedom to focus their design on concept, aesthetics, function or even a combination of the three, making the exhibit an opportunity to view how the designer perceives seating from their own perspective,” said Dr. John Turpin, Dean of the School of Art and Design.
