July auctions deliver an unexpected one-two punch of bright color and style for the home. Discover the latest, eye-catching pieces prominent houses have on the auction block this month.
Christie’s Interiors sale, taking place in London on July 21, is themed “At Home with Eugenie Niarchos,” and features Gothic furniture and works of art and an 18th- century glass collection, with pieces as diverse as a limited-edition remake of a pair of shoes designed for Judy Garland in 1938 by Ferragamo, a colorful Ganesha statue Niarchos discovered in Asia, and ornate rococco lighting. Sotheby’s will host its first Contemporary Living sale, an auction that combines photographs, prints, and 20th-century design categories, on July 22 in New York. A 250-piece collection from the 20th through 21st centuries, ranging from $300 to $300,000, will highlight works from designers and artists including Diane Arbus, Helmut Newton, David Hockney, Andy Warhol, Ellsworth Kelly, Mies van der Rohe and George Nakashima. Wright’s two-day Mass Modern sale unfolds in Chicago on July 10 and 11, presenting collectibles rife with color and pop, among them Jean-Michel Basquiat's skateboard decks and porcelain plates; a pair of bright blue Milo Baughman lounge chairs from 1970, and imaginative toys, bookends and prints from Yoshitomo Nara. The July 13 Oriental Rugs and Carpets auction at Bonhams in Los Angeles will feature hundreds of stunning rugs, from a Mohtasham Kashan carpet at $10,000 to $15,000 that hails from Central Persia and dates to the late 19th century to a golden Indo Tabriz carpet from India, circa 1900. Learn more.
