The annual lecture series “Dialogs LA” is meant to provoke discussion to enhance creativity, pushing the envelope on topics from the political and cultural impact of art and design, to the business of art and the international marketplace, to the latest art trends and movements.
The first dialog of Designer Thursday takes place at noon with writer, reporter and art critic Anthony Haden-Guest, moderated by artist and curator Bruce Helander. Entitled the Big Melt, it explores how the art world has changed in the last 25 years and is described as follows: One can see art’s new economic heft everywhere. And not only is the art world bigger, it’s in an accelerating state of melt. Many alternative art world economies are burgeoning. Street art. Online art. High tech art and Crafts gone wild.
At 2:00 p.m.,
Gugger will discuss the complexity of designing a space for a public art collection. He wrote, “The building can be an art piece in itself, grow attendance and become a destination for tourism.  But it has to stand the tests of time, house a collection in perpetuity, reflect the community and the collection it serves, and incorporate room for growth."
At 4:00 p.m. Magni will offer an illustrated conversation about how art, light, design and spirituality have inspired and shaped his 25-year career. A book signing of Magni Modernism will follow the lecture.
Designer Thursday concludes after the Collecting Fashion/Making History discussion at 5:30 p.m. wherein Kevin Jones, curator of the FIDM Museum, will discuss the Helen Larson Historic Fashion Collection. A book signing will follow.
Dialogs LA will continue through Saturday, January 19, and will feature Van Gogh Museum director, Axel Rüger; photographer Gil Garcetti; Emeritus director of MOCA, Cliff Einstein; Biennale di Venezia curator, Itala Schmelz; Mexico jewelry specialist and museum consultant Janet Zapata; President of La Ruta Maya, Fernando Piaz; and artists Kenton Nelson, Andrea Juan and Zhang Yu.
