Maison Gerard to showcase designer Mario Dal Fabbro
Feb 7, 2012

Maison Gerard Ltd. will host an exhibition and sale from February 23 through March 30 featuring the works of renowned Italian sculptor, author and Mid-Century furniture designer Mario Dal Fabbro (1913 – 1990). For the first time ever, over 50 of the artist's wood sculptures will be shown in one place.
In 1948, he moved to New York City armed with his manuscripts and a year later published Modern Furniture: Design and Construction. As a designer and craftsman he worked for major American companies including J.G. Furniture in New York and Quakertown, Pennsylvania, Knoll and Paul McCobb Design Associates.

In his lifetime, Dal Fabbro exhibited his works but never allowed them to be sold. He was trained as a sculptor but took an active role in the family furniture business. Dal Fabbro was born into a family of furniture-making craftsmen in Capella Maggiore, Treviso, Italy. He studied in Venice at the Institute for Decorative and Industrial Arts and at the Regio Magistero Artistico, majoring in art and design and graduating with honors in 1938.

In his later career, Dal Fabbro focused solely on his sculpture, perfecting his transformation of wood into his signature fluid and dynamic shapes. This exhibition is the latest in an ongoing series showcasing artists who are little known outside the collector’s market but whose work is important and noteworthy today.
