In celebration of Phillip King's 80th birthday, Masterpiece London (June 26 – July 2) and Thomas Dane Gallery will present a curated exhibition of King’s significant large-scale outdoor works on the South Grounds of The Royal Hospital Chelsea in London. A number of the King’s sculptural forms and modes will be offered for sale during the exhibition, and will range from his earlier works in the 1960s to present day.
“Combined with the Phillip King solo exhibition at Thomas Dane Gallery, opening June 11 until July 26, this will be a wholly deserved celebration of a remarkable working life that has spanned over 50 years and is continuing to this day,” said Nazy Vassegh, CEO of Masterpiece London.
Highlights include one of King’s most iconic cone sculptures “Genghis Khan,” as well as previously unseen pieces such as the 8m high “High Sky and Bling,” and the colorful “Ring Reel.” Other works on show from King’s early oeuvre include “Angle Poise,” “Slant,” “Spring-a-Ling,” and “Bus Shelter.”
Objects and artworks of the highest order will be presented across multiple disciplines including paintings and works on paper, ceramics, rare maps, sculpture, photography, jewelry, important furniture and contemporary design will all be for sale. All works have been stringently vetted by a committee of experts before their admittance to the fair.
“We are delighted to welcome back such a significant portion of our 2013 exhibitors,” said Vassegh of the 150+ exhibitors showing this year. “Our fifth fair will mark a milestone for us within the international art fair circuit and this level of support highlights the strength of our cross-collecting offering.”
Show hours are Thursday, June 26, and Friday, June 27, from 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, June 28, and Sunday, June 29, from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.; and Monday, June 30, and Wednesday, July 2, from 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.
The Masterpiece Marie Curie Party will take place on Tuesday, July 1, at 7:00 p.m. This is the second year that the charity has been the beneficiary. In 2013, the party chaired by Heather Kerzner raised a record £840,000 for the organization, which provides cancer patients and people with other terminal illnesses high quality care and support at the end of their life in the place of their choice.
