George III mahogany commode at Sotheby's
Sotheby's "Arts of Europe," a trove of 18th- through early 20th-century items, includes pieces ranging from English Continental furniture, tapestries and silver to clocks and ceramics. The collection boasts a George III mahogany commode attributed to Mayhew and Ince, as well as Vertu items including a gold-enamel snuff box (F. Bautte & Cie, Geneva, 1826–1837) and a pair of gold and pietre dure buckles (Johann Christian Neuber, German, circa 1770), plus tapestries depicting pastoral scapes such as the Kermesse, Gipsy Fortune Teller, Return from the Harvest and Milking Scene. Chinese blue and white serving dishes at Christie's
Christie's "Interiors" sale on May 19 and May 20 in London will spotlight a private collection of works by Louis Bourgeois-Borgex. Some highlights include seven Chinese blue and white oblong octagonal serving dishes, from the Qianlong period (1736–1795), with pieces featuring exotic flowers, riverscapes and a riverside pavilion. Also notable are a smiling 19th-century Chinese Dehua blanc-de-chine seated figure of Budai, a brightly colored pair of Dutch painted pewter chestnut urns complete with gilt flowerhead borders, and an elegant Italian red and gold silk damask panel, woven in six vertical strips and from the 18th or 19th century. On May 21, also in London, the house will feature "The English Collector," replete with such treasures as a George I Red Japanned and gilt-decorated chest, adorned with chinoiserie scenes of flowers, landscapes and flowers, and a pair of Scottish George III Giltwood Mirrors, circa 1760. Portrait of a lady, up for auction at Bonhams
On May 9 in Charlottesville, VA, Bonhams will offer up the collection of Baron Wouter J. P. Sijlmans Von Eldik, with particularly compelling paintings including a still life with nautilus cup and oysters, Circle of Cornelis De Vos, a portrait of a lady in a black dress with gold embroidery, and a well-rounded selection of other portraits, pastoral scenes and still lifes.
Gunnar Nylund's glazed stoneware vase collection, at Wright
In Chicago on May 7, Wright will unveil "Scandinavian Design," a selection that includes seating such as Børge Mogensen's 1959 Pair of Spanish Lounge Chairs, constructed of oak, leather and brass, flatweaves such as Ingrid Dessau's Reversible Flatweave Carpet of hand-woven wool, and an assortment of decorative pieces like Gunnar Nylund's 12-piece glazed stoneware vase collection.
