MoMA’s Destination: NYC celebrates urban design
May 2, 2013

More than 200 lifestyle products by New York designers including home accessories, furniture, paper goods and jewelry will be up for sale this month at MoMA as part of Destination: NYC, the 11th event in the Destination: Design series.
All of the products in the collection are designed in one of the five boroughs of New York City and manufactured in the United States. Muted colors, graffiti art and pop culture iconography are a few elements of New York’s culture that will be celebrated in the collection.

“We are so impressed by the depth of local talent submitted during our Open Call for New York designers last year,” said Emmanuel Plat, director of merchandising for MoMA’s retail division. “The innovative products and unique designs truly reflect urban living and led us to create our largest collection to date.”
The collection celebrates established and up-and-coming designers alike with product from long-time MoMA Design Store contributors such as Alexis Bittar, Baggu and Sandy Chilewich, as well as new discoveries in the New York design community. Following an open call for submissions, MoMA Design Store established a design jury to review product and curate the final collection.

Products such as the Tilt Stool, a functional seat, side table and rocking chair that can easily stack and store items, and the Wire Hanger, a wall organizer based on the iconic eponymous product, all answer the needs for more storage in an urban lifestyle. Personal accessories, including luggage tags, jewelry and scarves, showcase legendary New York landmarks that resonate with locals and tourists. The collection also highlights New York’s creative community in contemporary design using both handmade techniques and the newest technology including 3D printing.
“In New York City, we are fortunate to be surrounded by design that represents a wide range of backgrounds, ideas, and passions,” said Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design and director of research and development for MoMA and a member of the design jury that curated this collection. “We're thrilled to offer a direct connection to these designers through Destination: NYC, and hope the project will inspire both New Yorkers and guests to think critically about innovative design and its role in our everyday life.”
The Destination: NYC product collection will be available in MoMA Design Stores in New York City (11 West 53 Street, 44 West 53 Street, 81 Spring Street) and Tokyo and at MoMAstore.org, MoMAonlinestore.co.kr, and MoMAstore.jp beginning in May 15, 2013.
