AIA Los Angeles announced the 2011 Design Awards winners at a Design Awards & Party cohosted by Charles S. Cohen of Cohen Brothers Realty and sponsored by Italian Living Umbria last week at the Pacific Design Center Los Angeles.
The event honored excellence in work built by Los Angeles architects (Design Awards) as well as work by Los Angeles Architects as yet unbuilt — Next LA Awards. In both the Design and Next LA categories, jury awards are given in three classifications: Citation, Merit, and Honor. The Design Awards juries are comprised of notable architects from across the United States and abroad, were selected by the Design Awards Committee.
The NEXT LA Honor & Best in Show went to the No Mass House in Los Angeles (above) by Neil M. Denari Architects.
The Next LA Citation Awards went to San Francisco State University Mashouf Performing Arts Center by Michael Maltzan Architecture, Inc; Jin Tang Industrial Parkm White Collar Housing (Chengdu, China) by RNL Design& Charles Group International; MAS / Long Beach Mobile ArtSpace (Long Beach, CA) by Steve Roden / Formation Association / 64North / Buro Happold; and Stadtarchiv Luzern (Luzern, Switzerland) by XTEN Architecture.
NEXT LA Merit award went to Succulent House in Chicago by Murmur (above).
NEXT LA Honors META in Penco, Chile, by Johnston Marklee; Vault House in Oxnard, CA by Johnston Marklee (above); TARGET NATION: Thinking Out of the Big Box (Tracy, CA / Phoenix, AZ / Brooklyn, NY) by Roger Sherman Architecture & Urban Design with Greg Kochanowski.
Attendees included 40 firms and 36 Presidential Honorees receiving awards. The Cultural Affairs Architecture Awards were presented by Annie Chu; the Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles - Design Green Awards were presented by Erin McConaghey; the Next LA Awards were presented by Angela Brooks; the Design Awards were presented by Julie Eizenberg; and the Presidential Honor Awards were presented by Hsinming Fung.
