With the November cover, House Beautiful has collaborated with Digimarc Discover and Flipboard to incorporate several new digital features that give the reader a unique experience of the interior—something that can’t be done in print alone.
With Digimarc Discover, readers can scan the cover image of the magazine’s 2011 Designer Visions “Cinema Style” apartment to launch a one-minute digital movie in honor of Any Warhol’s early 8mm films.
The theme of the issue is “Day & Night” and it explores both decorating and entertaining ideas from this perspective, including the cover photograph of the magazine’s Designer Visions apartment, which is celebrating its grand opening this week at 1212 Fifth Avenue. Tied to the program’s “Cinema Style” theme and inspired by the movie “Factory Girl,” the digital short, “Twilight,” is a visual experience of the apartment’s designer, Heather Moore of Jed Johnson & Associates, the apartment, and New York City transitioning from day to night.
House Beautiful’s digital watermark program will feature a minimum of five watermarks in every issue. The November digital features include: a behind-the-scenes video walk-through of the November issue with Editor in Chief Newell Turner; a photo slideshow of a project by designer Mariette Himes Gomez; and a step-by-step video of the weaving process behind a Jim Thompson silk fabric that is featured in the issue.
A customized visual experience with Flipboard, the iPad App of the Year, will enable users to follow the latest news and trends from the editors, view beautiful photos and listen to designer interviews.
The issue is available October 18, and the video is currently available online.
