Rafael de Cárdenas was named Designer of the Year for Maison&Objet Americas 2016 in an evening reception held at Asia de Cuba, a restaurant designed by the designer-architect himself. The Designer of the Year distinction recognizes a North or South American industry pro who has made a significant contribution to the interior design and lifestyle industries over the past year. The show, now in its second annual edition, will take place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from May 10 to 13, 2016, with an awards reception honoring de Cárdenas to be held May 11. The designer will also speak at the Interior Design & Lifestyle Summit, as well as at the show’s conference.

Some of the designer’s recent work includes his line of furniture for Johnson Trading Gallery; projects such as the Baccarat flagship on Madison Avenue and the Nike 45 Grand fitness studio, both in New York; and Au Pont Rouge department store in St. Petersburg, Russia. De Cárdenas also was one of six pros asked to reimagine the Kartell Bourgie Lamp at ICFF last summer. He launched his career in fashion as a men’s collection designer for Calvin Klein before founding his own design firm, Architecture at Large, in 2006.
