After competitions in Modena and Bologna, last week Venice hosted the third edition of Open Design Italia, an international event and competition dedicated to self-produced and small series design.
Created in 2010 by Elena Santi and Laura Succini, Open Design Italia aims to promote new ways to approach design, which combine the creative process with the final production, as well as the collaboration between local designers, companies and makers.
Open Design Italia competition entry
Curated by Santi, Succini and Alan D’Incà, the competition was judged by Aldo Cibic, designer and founder of Cibicworkshop; Paolo Ulian, designer; Stefano Micelli, Professor of Economics and Business Management at the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice; Alessandro Molinari, Ottagono consultant; and Marco Zito, architect and professor of Industrial Design at the University IUAV of Venice.
The awards consited of the Ottagono magazine award, three Garagedesign awards and the Open Design Italia overall winner.
Ottagono award winning design
The prize awarded by Ottagono went to Perlamadredesign for the recovery of the tradition of glass making and in particular the technique of light in the creation of the collection of the Murano glass jewelry Butterfly Collection, produced in Murano in collaboration with the artisan and the Salento Patrizia Iacovazzi Venetian architect Evelina Pescarolo.
The Nordic Lamp by Federica Bubani of Faenza was awarded one of the Garagedesign awards, Soul Grey by designer Lecco Paul Vallara won another and the third awarded project was Flying Houses of Piquattropunto designed by Ascoli Piceno.
The Open Design Italia overall winner was awarded to the Library Penola, designed by Andrea Zausa of Venice, for the simplicity of the project—consisting of only two components—without connecting elements and the possibility of potentially infinite conformation.
The Garagedesign winning projects will be sold online, here and the Ottagono award winner will be featured in the magazine and on the magazine's website. Learn more about Open Design Italia, here.
