Pantone unveils new color app geared toward pros
Aug 8, 2016

Pantone Studio, a new iPhone app, was launched this month with designers in mind and an eye toward sharing, building and testing color palettes. Designed by digital agency Rokkan, the app allows users to share work via design software, on social media or with clients, collaborators and friends. The app is also home to Pantone’s library of 10,000-plus hues as well as trend information from the Pantone Color Institute.

The new Pantone Studio app

“Fifty-three years ago, Pantone was introduced as a standardized language to communicate specific colors in the print market,” says Ron Potesky, the company’s senior vice president and general manager. “Today, Pantone has become iconic and indispensable as the de facto language of color in all design disciplines, as well as a source of color intelligence and inspiration. Recognizing the needs and opportunities for designers today, we created Pantone Studio to provide them their own private color studio—a place where they can explore, capture, create and share color inspiration with friends and colleagues.”

The features include access to the Pantone library. The company explains, “To translate the familiar process of searching through colors in a physical Pantone fan deck into an instinctive digital user experience, each Pantone Guide is visually laid out in a chromatically organized grid that allows members to continuously scroll over color families to find the perfect hue.”

New hues will be automatically added to the app as they’re rolled out. In addition, users can create color palettes of up to five colors; extract colors from photos and other images; search by color number; add searchable tags to their palettes; and store and save an unlimited collection of palettes. The app also allows users to cull images from social media or their own photo album to pull colors and create a palette of inspiration.

The Pantone Studio app is available for free download, with the option of unlocking access to all tools via a paid subscription.
