“A great deal of inspiration for this piece materialized during a walkthrough of the museum while it was under construction,” said designer Dave Pickett. “Elements such as the architecture’s exposed infrastructure and gem-like exterior influenced much of the form and functional details.”
Floorscape is a modular, industrial style floor lounge created by Pickett for the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Cleveland, the first building designed in the U.S. by Farshid Moussavi Architecture (FMA). The Gund Commons room, for which Floorscape was developed, contrasts the idea that traditional museums are intimidating. The space is described as an ‘urban living room,’ promoting a more casual museum experience, a place where the surrounding community can come in and ‘stay awhile.’
Floorscape is made up of leather faceted cushions supported by a lightweight aluminum framework finished in a black powder coat. The lounge is extremely modular with each additional unit adding to the landscape experience.
Floorscape lives amongst the other art and media that is being played and displayed in and around MOCA. When Floorscape is not being used as seating, the aluminum framework is hung on the wall for storage and as a result, transforms into a piece of living sculpture reflecting light and shadow beautifully.
Product designer by day at Carbon and furniture designer by night, Pickett blends insight and ingenuity to create designs that solve problems in refreshing ways. A graduate of Cleveland Institute of Art, his work has been featured on some of the world’s largest and most influential blogs. Most recently, his innovative camping concept, Basecamp, was recognized as a runner-up in the Service Category of the 2012 Core77 Awards and as a Finalist in the 2012 IDEA Awards.
