Charpin, who graduated in 1984 from the National School of Fine Arts, Bourges, worked in the studio of British designer George Sowden, who was one of the founders of the Memphis Group, and has designed for firms like Post Design, Zanotta, Montina, Venini, Alessi and others.

Some of the highlights of his work: creating Intervalle, a collection of glasses and a carafe for Cristalleries de Saint-Louis; teaching at the ESAD de Reims and at ECAL in Lausanne, Switzerland; and producing a series of glass objects at the CIRVA (Centre International de Recherche sur le Verre et les Arts Plastiques) in Marseille.

The Maison&Objet show honors two designers yearly with the distinction; the September event focuses on an interior designer, while the January one is geared toward a product designer. Charpin joins prior honorees including Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Joseph Dirand, Odile Decq and others.
