Showing both reverence for the material cashmere and an irreverent approach to design, Rani Arabella introduces Savoia Imperiale this weekend at the New York International Gift Fair. The most recent collection from the lauded Italian luxury lifestyle brand includes pillows and throw blankets executed with never-before-seen design techniques and unconventional color combinations. Known for its exquisite cashmere products for home, men and women, Rani Arabella is represented at fine retailers such as Takashimaya and Gracious Home. The company also sells directly to interior design and hospitality clients, and offers custom textiles to top luxury brands such as Hermes, Gucci and Loro Piana. Each Rani Arabella product is designed and manufactured by hand by artisans in Italy using proprietary colors and a limited color run and limited production. “No other manufacturer can come close to our quality and uniqueness,” says Harris Chatwal, designer and owner of Rani Arabella. For Savoia Imperiale, Chatwal stepped up the brand’s already exacting standards by experimenting with new colors, techniques and shapes that are unlikely to be seen or repeated by competitors. A group of pillows features mixed colored yarns, such as orange and cobalt blue, creating a nuanced third hue. A new throw blanket stitches together knitted and woven cashmere parts, creating an unadorned field of cashmere with luxurious cable-knit border and delicate fringe trim. A third product, an oblong pillow, measures a decadent 80 inches long. “It’s not for everyone,” says Chatwal. More traditional colors and shapes, such as 22-inch and 26-inch-square pillows, remain a part of the line. Whether innovating new designs or creating tried-and-true luxury products, the painstaking work by Rani Arabella artisans remains. “It takes a year to create a Rani Arabella throw,” explains Chatwal. It begins with hand-selecting pigments to dye the cashmere fibers, a process that guarantees that the hue is proprietary to the brand—and never to be repeated. Sampling and weaving, knitting and stitching of the product are arduous, ensuring the finest possible product. “Most of the artisans who work with me have a minimum of 50 years experience in their fields,” says Chatwal.
