Sandra Nunnerley’s new rugs are distinctly urban

Designer Sandra Nunnerley’s first-ever rug collection arrives with two city-inspired designs. Madison and Gramercy, her collaborations with The Rug Company, evoke Manhattan’s “angularity and cosmopolitan point of view,” explains the British brand. How did the collection come about?

The rugs are a result of Nunnerley’s design projects—and her book. “When designing for clients, I tend to gravitate toward designing custom rugs—they impart the exact look and feel we are trying to convey—and many of the custom rugs we’ve designed over the years were captured in my book, Interiors.” The Rug Company’s founders, Christopher and Suzanne Sharp, saw her work in the books, “and were impressed with my firm’s aesthetic and the versatility of the designs, so they reached out.” The collaborators began a two-year process of “refining these offerings over meetings in London, when we were traveling to Europe working on our projects and meeting with clients.”

With a number of manufacturers and partners from which to choose, why was The Rug Company the right fit? “Over the years, many companies have approached my firm to produce pieces that emulate our style, but we’ve been very selective in favor of creating something that feels beautiful, allows us to work with only the best artisans in the industry, and addresses a real need in the market,” explains Nunnerley. “With all of those factors finally coming together, I was able to pursue this collection with The Rug Company because their commitment to quality, craftsmanship, design and service dovetails so beautifully with my own.”

That said, she hopes there will be more partnerships in the works. “There’s been a wonderful synergy between the two companies, and we look forward to future collaborations.”

The prices start at $3,096 (6 feet by 4 feet) or $129 per square foot.
