Seven design companies celebrate milestone anniversaries
Mar 24, 2015

Everyone loves birthdays, and when design brands mark major years, interior designers reap the rewards through new collections and never-before-seen collaborations. Editor at Large has put together a list of how seven companies will celebrate milestone anniversaries this year, including York Wallcoverings, Riva 1920, Edward Fields, Brentano Design Studio, John Boone, Robin Wilson Home and Fromental.
York Wallcoverings—120 years
Over its 120 years, York Wallcoverings has been committed to American-made, quality products and combining cutting-edge technology with original printing processes. York was the first American manufacturer to incorporate sand and glass into wallpaper designs, as well as use Swarovski crystals on wallpaper for the residential market. York also manufactures surface-printed wallpapers with an original machine that has been continuously running since 1895.

Riva 1920—95 years
Italian furniture company Riva 1920 will mark its 95th year with a retrospective of the past two decades at Salone del Mobile 2015. The retrospective will feature more than 100 pieces of iconic furniture as a way to examine pivotal moments in the company’s history and to thank designers who have contributed to Riva 1920’s success—all displayed as if in a traditional workshop. Alongside the celebration of pieces such as Kauri, a new table by Terry Dwan and the Briccole’s collection, Riva 1920 will feature the project “Ground Zero, Ground Heroes,” dedicated to the children of Italian-American rescue workers who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Riva 1920 will also launch the Outdoor Collection, cedar elements that change to a refined dove-grey tone after time outside, as well as bring back the use of reforestation woods such as walnut, oak and cherry.

Brentano Design Studio—25 years
Textile house Brentano Design Studio, led by Iris Wang, turns 25 this year. What was an eight-pattern studio in 1990 is now an international leader in textiles, including polyurethane faux leather, outdoor and eco-friendly and fire retardant products. To celebrate a quarter-century in business, Brentano is releasing the Studio collection, a tribute to the artists who have inspired Brentano’s designers such as Sanyu, Jack Tworkov and Monet, and Jubilee, a special collection made specifically for the anniversary.

Famed furniture maker John Boone celebrates 25 years of handcrafted furnishings. Founders John Boone and Christopher Lockwood oversee the construction of every piece in their Columbia County warehouse, alongside world-class artisans, and continue to infuse a modern look with a sense of history and craftsmanship. John Boone’s trademark aesthetic of handmade simplicity is seen in all four of its collections, whether furnishings or lighting fixtures.

Robin Wilson Home—15 years
Robin Wilson Home, the allergy-free, eco-friendly firm behind the “clean design” movement, turns 15. Wilson herself is a nationally recognized eco-friendly and healthy-space interior designer and an advocate for clean construction methods. She also is the first woman to license her brand to a line of eco-friendly kitchen cabinetry. Also on the horizon for 2015 is Wilson’s book Clean Design and the nationwide release of Robin Wilson Home allergy-free and eco-friendly quilts.

Fromental—10 years
Fromental celebrated their 10th year of handmade wallpapers, fabrics and accessories with a party coinciding with the grand re-opening of London’s Goring Hotel. Fromental created a scenic paper wall covering, painted on hand-gilded silver leaf, for the Front Hall, portraying a wildlife-filled Arcadian landscape. Fromental’s collections of high-end couture for walls range from a modern take on 18th-century chinoiserie and contemporary, panoramic 20th-century compositions, to a Roomskins collection of subtle, non-repeating patterns.
