If you thought April was a big month for show house openings, May and June are no different. The season of show houses continues with major openings in and around New York, New Jersey and Oklahoma City.
Kips Bay Decorator Show House (New York City)—May 1-29
This year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House was designed and built by architecture firm McKim, Mead & White in 1884 on the Southeast corner of 51st Street and Madison Avenue. Renovated in 2011, the six-story “Mansion on Madison” is 26,190 sq-ft and boasts a grand staircase, landmarked hallways with marble floors, 16-foot high ceilings with elegant moldings, multiple Italian marble fireplaces, and a carved paneled room with barrel-vaulted ceilings.
Twenty two top interior designers have taken on rooms in the “Mansion on Madison,” including Carrier and Company Interiors Ltd.; Christopher Peacock; Cullman & Kravis Inc.; Darryl Carter, Inc.; Edward Lobrano Interior Design, Inc.; Ingrao Inc.; John Douglas Eason Interiors; Juan Montoya Design; Kirsten Kelli, LLC; Mark Hampton, LLC; Markham Roberts Inc.; Martyn Lawrence Bullard Design; Matthew Quinn; Mendelson Group, Inc.; Meyer Davis Studio, Inc.; ODADA (Orlando Diaz-Azcuy Design Associates); Robin Sacks Decorative Painting; SPaN Architecture; Vicente Wolf Associates; Villalobos Desio; William T. Kips Bay Salon Nights presented by The Monacelli Press will take place every Tuesday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The series features talks and book signings by Ellie Cullman, William T. Georgis, Juan Montoya and Vicente Wolf.
Proceeds from the show house, which is expected to attract more than 20,000 visitors this year, benefit the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club which offers innovative after-school and enrichment programs for more than 11,000 youth, ages 6 through 18, in ten locations throughout the Bronx.
The show house is open from Thursday, May 1, through Thursday, May 29. Hours are Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.; and Sundays 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased online or at the door.
Mansion in May Designer Show House (Far Hills, NJ)—May 1-31
More than 60 of the area’s leading interior and landscape designers have been selected by the Women’s Association of Morristown Medical Center for this year’s Mansion in May Designer Show House, which will open on May 1, at the historic Blairsden estate in Far Hills, New Jersey.
The Louis XIV Chateau-style mansion has been hailed as one of the finest examples of Beaux-arts architecture in the United States. The home was built as a country estate by New York financier and sportsman C. Ledyard Blair in the years 1897-1903. No expense was spared in constructing the grand four-story mansion complete with 14-foot tall ceilings, marble stairways, and carved fireplace mantels in every room.

Mansion in May will be open to the public Thursday, May 1, through Saturday, May 31. Show house tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door. Proceeds benefit two causes at the Morristown Medical Center’s Goryeb Childen’s Hospital: an expanded Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a new Autism and Child Development Center.
Symphony Show House (Oklahoma City, OK)—May 3-18
The Symphony Show House is the annual benefit put on by the Oklahoma City Orchestra, and will take place this year at the Founders Tower Penthouse.
Nicknamed “View to a Thrill,” the show house features rooms by interior designers and firms including Allenton Interiors, Lifestyle Stores, Amini’s Galleria, Mathis Brothers Furniture, Bob Mills Furniture, Meister Designs Inc., Caroline Romano Designs, Mister Robert Fine Furniture & Design, Carte’s Interiors, Paint Inspirations Inc., Kasa Wallpaper Studio, SC Design, Keven Carl Design, Traditions Fine Furniture and Design, Koslow’s Furs, UCO Interior Design, Lezley Lynch Design and Whitworth Lawn and Landscape.
The show house is open to the public Saturday, May 3, through Sunday, May 18. Show house hours are 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased online.
The Designer Show House of New York (New York City)—May 16-June 29
The inaugural Designer Showhouse of New York sponsored by NYC&G (New York Cottages and Gardens) magazine will support the new Lenox Hill HealthPlex now under construction in Greenwich Village, at the Residences at W New York—Downtown.
Renowned interior designers Alexa Hampton and Richard Mishaan will serve as co-chairs of the event. Particpating designers include Anne Tarasoff Interiors, Atelier Durante Interior Design PLLC, Baltimore Design Group, Barbara Page Home, Caleb Anderson Design, CetraRuddy, Daniel Park Design, Darci Heather New York, diSalvo Interiors, Erik R Galiana for SAVIOR SOHO, Felicia Zwebner Designs, Harry Heissman Inc., Jacqueline Hosford Interior Design LLC, Ken Gemes Interiors, Mannarino Designs Inc., Meg Braff Designs LLC, MJ Grace Studio, Neal Beckstedt Studio, Ovadia Design Group, Patricia Fisher Design, Rinehardt | Miller Interiors.
The show house will kick off with a preview party on Thursday, May 15, and is open to the public from Friday, May 16, through Sunday, June 29. Show house hours are Tuesdays through Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (closed Mondays). Admission is $35 and includes a show house Journal.
2014 House of the Year (Rhinebeck, NY)—June 6-8
Created by Catskill Farms in collaboration with guest interior designers Suysel dePedro Cunningham and Anne Maxwell Foster of Tilton Fenwick and Country Living magazine editors, this year’s project is a 1,500-square-foot “new old home” that captures the charm, beauty, and character of the past.
"Infusing historic charm with fresh design elements, this 'new old house' will epitomize the inviting, sit-and-stay-awhile style that readers associate with the Country Living brand," said Country Living editor-in-chief Rachel Hardage Barrett.
Located about two hours north of New York City, Rhinebeck is also hosting the first Country Living Fair of the season. All Rhinebeck Country Living Fair ticket holders are invited to take a complimentary tour of the nearby house.
The house is open for tours from Friday, June 6, through Sunday, June 8, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Country Living will provide a continuous shuttle bus service for Fair ticket holders to tour the house. Fair admission is $13 in advance and $16 at the door; three-day weekend passes are available for $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
Holiday House Hamptons (Sag Harbor, NY) June 29-August 10
Holiday House Hamptons will host its second edition sponsored by HC&G (Hamptons Cottages & Gardens) magazine as dozens of top interior designers transform rooms that will be revealed at the Opening Night Party on Saturday, June 28. The house will be open for public tours starting Sunday, June 29, and will remain open through Sunday, August 10. Stay tuned for more details as the opening approaches.
