On May 15, the Decoration and Design Building (DDB) will bring together experts in various fields of design for open houses, lectures, panel discussions, book signings and showroom programs for its annual Spring Market—a day-long event that draws designers and editors from the tri-state area and beyond.
The keynote presentation, Off the Record: Lessons from the 2013 New Trad Designers features Ann Maine, editor-in-chief of Traditional Home, and kicks off the day at 9:30 a.m. in the Astra Café and Conference Center on the 14th floor.
Maine’s panel of emerging design talent includes three of the 2013 New Trad Designers who will discuss the challenges of building a design business to the impact of social media. They will share their perspectives on how they think about design, their clients, the design marketplace, growing their business. A reception will immediately follow in the Donghia Showroom, Suite 700.
With more than 30 showroom programs taking place throughout the day, here are a few highlights:
Avery Boardman (Suite 414) debuts their latest upholstery collections. President and owner Darren DeMatteo will present the new lines as well as bespoke seating, sleeping, storage, and multi-purpose solutions.
Brunschwig & Fils (Suite 1202) Brunschwig & Fils is offering a hard hat tour of the showroom since they’re not quite ready for the big reveal. They invite designers to the showroom at 10:30 a.m. to check out the progress and enjoy a cup of coffee and light breakfast. Construction on the transformation will be well underway, so there will be lots to see!
Paul H. Lee Carpets & Rugs, LLC (Suite 518) asks “What is best for your client, a custom carpet or a standard product? Why do so many designers shy away from custom products?” Find out the answers to these questions at the showroom presentation.
Andrew Fisher, Jeffry Weisman and their newly published book
Walters Wicker (Suite 538) celebrates the launch of the new Athena Collection from the Wicker Works. Designers Andrew Fisher and Jeffry Weisman of Fisher Weisman will discuss the details and inspiration that drove their creative process when designing this distinctive new collection. Following the presentation, you’ll have a chance to purchase a signed copy of their new book, Artful Decoration: Interiors.
Classic Rug Collection, Inc. (Suite 1805) presents Truly Custom Broadloom with CEO Aaron J. Pirner of White Oak Carpet Mills and rug designer Barbara Barran. Learn how to create your own designs in custom broadloom rather than playing mix and match with borders and fields. Refreshments will be served.
Lowell/Edwards (Suite 518) will show designers new and innovative ways to disguise or conceal a TV in a room, so that it doesn’t interfere with a design. Framed mirrored TVs, motorized artwork, and pop-up TV cabinets are among the topics that will be covered. Guests will see the aesthetic and Lowell/Edwards will provide the technical details. Refreshments will be served.
Warp & Weft (Suite 1203) will present the latest collections of hand-knotted and hand-tufted area rugs and carpets.
Window Modes Ltd. (Suite 1615) will celebrate the merger of three top-trade resources with more than 150 years in combined experience. CEO Douglas Schulman will host a presentation on GlassKote, a permanent custom color coating that can be applied to almost any type of glass.

Thom Filicia and his latest book
Meet Thom Filicia in the Kravet showroom (Suite 324) for sweet treats as well as a book signing of his latest book, American Beauty: Renovating and Decorating a Beloved Retreat. American Beauty is part memoir, part decorating book—an inspirational resource that shows how the designer renovated and decorated a fixer-upper in the Finger Lakes and turned it into a modern American home. In addition, guests can preview Filicia’s latest collections for Kravet, including fabric and trimmings, and get a sneak peak at his new furniture collection launching this summer.
Lorin Marsh (Suite 720) invites guests to meet three of today’s leading interior designers—Robert Passal, Ghislaine Vinas, and Christopher Coleman—who will illustrate the importance of accessorizing. Each of the designers will be paired with New York City design students and together they will collaborate on a hands-on design challenge, meant to showcase individual style and demonstrate how essential accessorizing is in the design process.
Join Trim Queen Jana Platina Phipps in the Pindler & Pindler showroom (Suite 1536) as she presents a visual tour of contemporary design applications of trimmings. She will explore the evolution of passamenterie from a handcrafted art form to the semi-automated process it is today. Phipps will also introduce the recently launched exclusive Linen Trims Collection by Pindler & Pindler and explain its merit in fiber and design.
Dakota Jackson (Suite 501) will explore the topic, “Game Change: Evolution in the Luxury Design Market.” When the economic bubble burst in 2008, the ever-burgeoning luxury design market began a series of rapid changes that continue to evolve. This includes the way designers and their clients work together, the new world of sourcing, the challenge to product designers and manufacturers involving the loss of craftsmanship, and the reconfiguring of established business models in an attempt to remain viable and relevant. Wall Street Journal architectural writer Julie Iovine will host a dialogue with designer Dakota Jackson on these pivotal changes.
Join Rose Tarlow Melrose House (Suite 1616) for a trunk show in the showroom to preview the newest collection of spring textiles.
In the Vaughan showroom (Suite 1511), Charles Pavarini III will explore the integration of new lighting products within interior architecture and design and how to maintain the beautiful, warm environments designers have grown accustomed to. Re-lamping of existing fixtures and working with color rendition as it influences form and texture of the interior furnishings will also be addressed.
Mary McDonald and Martyn Lawrence Bullard
Schumacher (Suite 832) will present the Martyn Lawrence Bullard wallcovering collection and the Mary McDonald fabric collection, as well as the Mary McDonald rug collection exclusively for Patterson, Flynn & Martin. Join these celebrity designers as they share their inspiration and creative insights behind each of their collections. The conversation will be moderated by Jason Chen, home furnishings editor of Departures Magazine. A champagne reception will follow. Due to limited space, you must RSVP for this event.
Christopher Peacock (5th Floor Annex) will host president and CEO, Christopher Peacock and Bose’s Jennifer Mallett for an intimate and interactive discussion about how to integrate sound and vision into a client’s residence. Peacock and Mallett believe one should never compromise the quality of touching or hearing. You don’t need to be afraid of technology; you can embrace it and impress your clientele with the touch of a button.
JAB Anstoetz (Suite 102) will host designers Alla Akimova, Christopher Coleman, Bella Mancini, Tara Seawright, and Michael Tavano as they take attendees on a journey to their favorite spring getaways through the creation of inspired and entertaining table designs. Blogger Patrick Hamilton will be the tour guide through the designers’ adventurous concepts, featuring JAB Anstoetz products and Lenox dinnerware, flatware and stemware.
Dorothy Cosonas, creative director of KnollTextiles and Knoll Luxe, will present the latest collection of upholstery, drapery and wallcoverings in the Knoll Luxe showroom (Suite 1702).

Join Crestron for a cocktail and a free CEU presentation in the showroom (Suite 407).
