Sotheby's June 9 auction spotlights 20th century design

Masterpieces of art and design will take their place on the auction block June 9 at Sotheby’s New York headquarters, with a special focus on two private collections of iconic French Art Deco Design, including works by Jean Dunand, Pierre Chareau, Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Paul Dupré-Lafon.

Additionally, premier pieces of American and European origin as well as Scandinavian design, midcentury French furniture and contemporary design (including an array of work from Jean Prouvé, Alexandre Noll, Pierre Jeanneret, Claude Lalanne, Ron Arad, Maarten Baas and Nendo). Pieces range in price from a few thousand to $350,000.

The Lava Vase by Louis C. Tiffany
Some of the highlights include: a 1929 desk crafted meticulously of rosewood, leather, nickel-plated brass, steel and glass by Paul Dupré-Lafon with an estimate of $250,000-$350,000; Poul Henningsen's "The House of the Future" Ceiling Light, which is one of 20 lights installed in "The House of Tomorrow" in an exhibit of a super-modern home in Copenhagen in 1959, estimated between $200,000-$300,000; and the Lava Vase by Tiffany Studios, made with Louis C. Tiffany's "Lava" glass technique, which captures the spirit of flowing lava.
