Dorothy Draper’s line of classic mid-century American designs, as produced by the Kindel Furniture Company, will be getting an update for the new season, in line with Kindel’s collaboration with interior designer Eric Cohler. The company recently hired Cohler to revive the New York showroom and overall merchandising and branding by combining classic pieces with modern styling.

Kindel has produced Draper’s designs since the 1940s, and Cohler will be combining the classic pieces with new and unexpected hardware, finishes and lacquers. Examples can already be seen at the Carlyle, Mark Hopkins and Greenbrier hotels: the pinwheel chest and Monte Carlo commode have been refreshed with shades such as tangerine, indigo and vanilla cream, with matte gold or silver hardware.

These pieces, and others, will be revealed at the opening of Kindel’s national showroom at the New York Design Center on Feb. 26. The showroom will host items from across all of Kindel’s luxury brands, including Robert A.M. Stern, Winterthur and Karges. However Draper’s particular influence will be felt through a special pavilion, entered through vintage Baroque style doors. The interior will feature black and white marble floors and a classic chandelier.
Kindel Cerused Oak Dining Table
In addition to the reinvention of Draper’s collection, Cohler turned his creative skills towards other Kindel and Winterthur pieces. A double-pedestal mahongany dining table has been recast in smokey gray cerused oak, and an 18th-century Philadelphia style lowboy was updated with the addition of velum-front drawers and polished nickel hardware. Cohler’s efforts make a splash in the landscape of American design and style, and promise to herald a new era.
